Are you getting stuck when assessing or managing elbow? Well let’s try and answer a few questions here.
Is there a difference between traumatic and overuse injuries at the elbow? The quick reply would be traumatic tends to be linked to a single episode, whereas overuse is more likely linked to multiple episodes. Both however, can present as new, recurrent & persistent symptoms. We therefore need to appreciate the mechanism of injury to better understand these differences and how this information can assist with prognosis. Don’t worry…we will aim to keep things simple & clinically relevant in this presentation.
When assessing the elbow are objective measures of any use? There is widespread debate on whether objective measures are useful in any clinical assessment. One could say that if you don’t measure…then you are guessing. In sports, comes down to the type of injury but also the context. Testing everything for everyone is not suggested, as much as not testing at all. It is therefore useful to appreciate what is available and pragmatically useful in providing tangible information. We will therefore also cover relevant testing in this presentation.
What should we consider when managing injuries at the elbow? Immediately we are drawn to an intervention-based approach, implying considering hands-on vs hands-off approach for a given injury. Of course, this is an important part of the plan, however, we should also aim to go wider with our approach. Are you therefore considering other joints or the whole person within your approach? What does this mean?…we will definitely cover all too!….so join us!
